The Quest for Megalodon Day 9

 


Our first stop this morning was at Mammoth Cave National Park. We contemplated so many of the tours, and ultimately decided that we would just do the self guided tour this time around. (Primarily because we weren't exactly sure when we would arrive!) When we have more time and are not just passing through, we will plan on some of the other tours. 


There was a little bit of disappointment from Dane today. He didn't do his research on this stop and was not happy to hear that Mammoth Cave did not in fact have any mammoths. However after exploring the cave, he did still give it a 9/10. 








Then we hit the road! Our next stop was the Indianapolis Children's Museum. We had forgotten about the change in time zones and ran into a little bit of traffic, so we only had an hour to explore. They have a pretty amazing "Dinosphere"









We will be back another time to explore more of the museum exhibits! Our final stop for the day before heading to our hotel was the Uranus Fudge Shop in Anderson, Indiana. If you have been following the blog, you may remember that we previously visited the one in Missouri. It was raining today, so we did not take as many photos outdoors. We also noticed that this location seems to be a lot smaller.





We are hunkered down in South Bend for the night. You can tell that we have moved further north as the temperatures are a lot cooler. We only have a couple of days left before we are home.

Today was a day at Sea. We started the day with a presentation about Global Warming and how it is impacting Alaska. There was a really good group discussion that followed.  Then in the afternoon Steve put on a great show for us and talked about the connections and experiences we made and reminded us about how important it is to bring that back to our kids.  It was another #bestdayever We went to dinner in the dining room and caught a few more photos  A huge shout out to the whole team for making this an amazing professional development opportunity.  Including all of the dinner time magic tricks.  Then... after dinner, we sat on our balcony and watched a pod of orca hunting near the shore. They were too far away for good photos, but we were excited to see them! Tomorrow we start the land portion of our vacation in Vancouver!

On the Hunt For Dinosaurs Once Again! Day 8

We started this morning out in Kemmerer, Wyoming just a little ways from the Fossil Lake Safari Quarry.  We spent 4 hours with a chisel and a hammer looking through chunks of limestone to find prehistoric fossils of fish! There was the possibility of finding something else, but we only found fish today. It was super cool!  After we were done "fishing" there were saws for us to cut down the fossils we found into more manageable pieces.  Then, we drove through a good section of Wyoming.... We stopped for an overlook and photo op at the Red Canyon. It was absolutely stunning. Photos really do not do it justice. The landscape on our drive was amazing.  We saw a lot of cows today, and there were even some goats outside the restaurant we stopped at for dinner! On the Hunt For Dinosaurs Once Again! Day 2

This morning started with some rain in Superior, Wisconsin. We had breakfast at hotel and then started our trek further west. Our first stop was in Perham, Minnesota. We didn't know that it was the self proclaimed turtle racing capital of the world. The troll portal was in a small pocket park that had some really cool murals and artistic turtles.  After finding the portal, we continued our journey west with a stop to see Jacob Everear. He is troll number 134 made by Thomas Dambo. If you are not familiar with him, he is a Danish artist who makes sculptures out of reclaimed wood. His trolls have become quite popular all over the world. You can learn more on his website here. While we were in the area, we found out that Frazee is also the home of the World's Largest Turkey, so of course we had to stop there first.  Today's trolls are part of Project 412 in the greater Detroit Lakes area.
