The Quest for Megalodon Day 6
We spent almost 10 hours (with a few breaks) in the mud today.
Some people go to Disney, some people go to the beach.....
We tend to go on big adventures and dig in the dirt.
Today was one of those epic dig in the dirt kind of days.
We had some wonderful tour guides with Palmetto Fossil Excursions. We spent 6+/- hours digging at their Lightening Site for the first part of our day. We moved a lot of dirt....
The first big find of the day goes to Dane...
He was pretty geeked to have this fossil checked off of his bucket list! His first Megalodon tooth!
Then, I found a big chunk of baleen whale jaw with shark took markings on it!
We found oodles of other teeth.
It was hot in the sun, but the shade umbrellas helped a lot! It was much cooler than most of our dinosaur digs have been and we were sitting in an area of damp clay, which helped to keep us cooler.
At about four hours in, I was pretty sure I was digging out a big rock.... but I was being careful just in case..... and guess what!!!! It was a 5.11" Megalodon tooth! Our guide said it was one of the largest bottom teeth they had seen at that site.
When we were just about done with the lightening site, Allan found his first full meg! It wasn't a big one, but we were all able to say that we found at least one megalodon tooth today! (We are going home with at least 10 of them along with some pieces!)
Then, we moved to the 100 Acre Site. At this site, you don't dig. You carry piles of dirt clay to the grate and you wash through the material.
It was a different experience to be spraying the dirt with water for a couple of hours.
We found a wide range of shark teeth, some shells, vertebrae, stingray teeth, petrified wood, ....
And then, Dane found something so rare... they kept it.
A prehistoric goblin shark tooth!
We left tired and dirty, but man was it is a great day!
There are some more videos there too! Some of today's videos were too large for the blog.
